One-time butcher Leonard Greene, has put his skills to the test, as he has now begun to make doggy treats. The 39 year old dog lover, grew up on a farm in Mullingar, but after losing a job in the construction industry, decided to work his knowledge of the meat industry into this new business.

The meaty dog treats, which are made from 100% Irish beef, can be found in veterinary clinics throughout the country. The snacks, known as ‘MeatSnax’ were created after extensive laboratory tests in Greene’s Department of Agriculture-licensed factory in Multyfarnham.

But where did Greene get the inspiration for his business? After sampling the treats on his own labradors, Sam, Cyndi and Ziggy, he said: “I grew up on a farm, surrounded by pets and animals, so I’ve always been very interested in animal health. I saw that there was a gap in the market for an Irish made pet treat which would have more nutritional benefits than other treats on sale. Having worked in the meat industry for a decade, I spent the next ten years working in the engineering world, as a welder and fabricator. Then, when I lost my job during the collapse of the construction industry, I saw my chance to put all my skills together, and to turn my passion for canine health into a new business venture”.

Greene’s treats will soon be sold in D.I.Y chains and pet food shops, but the big news from this home-grown manufacturer is that he has recently begun exporting the treats to Finland, and has his sights set on breaking into the Swedish and Norwegian Market. And with a huge proportion of EU households owning a dog, Greene has potentially backed a winner!
